Texture, color and sealer affect both appearance and maintenance. Review sample finishes before selecting a pattern, and discuss traction in areas exposed to rain. Final color can vary with materials, weather and curing conditions.

How stamped concrete is made
Stamped concrete is a standard slab finished with color and texture while it is still workable. Color can be mixed into the concrete, broadcast on the surface, or both. Release agents add contrast and keep the stamping mats from sticking. The mats are pressed in a planned sequence, edges are detailed by hand, and the surface is sealed after curing.
Popular patterns
- Ashlar slate: rectangular stone shapes for patios.
- Flagstone and fieldstone: irregular, natural-looking shapes.
- Cobblestone and brick: common for borders and walkways.
- Wood plank: a deck-like look without boards to replace.
A plain broom-finished field with a stamped border can give a decorative look at a lower cost than stamping the whole area.
Maintenance and traction
Sealer protects color and brings out texture, but it wears with sun and traffic. Plan to clean and reseal every two to three years, more often in high-traffic or shaded areas. Ask about anti-slip additives for pool decks, steps and spots that stay wet.
Is stamped concrete a good fit?
Stamped concrete suits patios and walkways where appearance matters. For driveways with heavy traffic or areas where you prefer minimal upkeep, a broom finish or exposed aggregate may be more practical. Compare costs on the price guide.

Stamped concrete: common questions
How long does stamped concrete last?
With a sound base and regular resealing, stamped concrete can last for decades. Color and sealer need periodic maintenance to keep it looking its best.
Is stamped concrete slippery?
Sealed stamped concrete can be slick when wet. Textured patterns and anti-slip additives in the sealer improve traction.
Can stamped concrete be repaired?
Small repairs are possible, but matching color and pattern exactly is difficult. Good preparation and joint placement help avoid the need.
